The Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou Music Foundation is a 501 C organization based in Arlington, VA whose mission is to empower communities and nurture children by providing music education and opportunities to those who are in lower income brackets.  Recently the foundation began fundraising activities to make documentary film  that would highlight the lifetime achievements of the remarkable Ethiopian nun and Music composer, Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou.

Why should people support this film?

Emahoy Tsegué-Maryam Guèbrou’s life spans three continents and nine decades, a study in Europe, the Italian occupation of Ethiopia during WWII, preparing to be a concert pianist and a call to monastic life. It is epic to say the least.

Little is known about her journey both as a musician and as a spiritual figure. Although she had published vinyl records in the 70s it was her solo compositions in Ethiopiques 21 published by Buda Musique that made her world famous. She was 85 years old then, and at the age of 93 she continues to play music and has a sharp mind.

The biopic is an inspiring story, particularly, to musicians and artists who struggle with their craft, and will help to inspire any others who need to overcome obstacles in their own lives.   As a musician, she struggled to be true to her art given that the piano was alien to the Ethiopian culture, what’s more playing music as a nun was considered heresy by the Ethiopian Orthodox Church. Yet, Emahoy persisted both with her music as with her faith and remained loyal to her church as a nun.

This film should particularily appeal to the Ethiopian community as Emahoy’s musical accomplishments is not a personal one but makes a special contribution to the advancement of our music on a grander scale.

What makes this film especially unique is the fact that we have the opportunity to have Emahoy tell her own story in her own words.

Where are we in the project?

Our heartfelt thanks goes out to all of our supporters, who not only encouraged us to continue with this project, but also made financial contributions towards the making of this important documentary.  Making a film requires significant amount of money. Without your help, we couldn’t even have been able to begin to make preparations to film PHASE 1 of our film.  We are very far away from our goal!!!

Since we launched our campaign two months ago on gofund me (https://www.gofundme.com/pmr3b54k) we’ve been able to raise a little over $3,000 with the backing of 33 people so far.  Imagine the impact, if more of us contributed a minimum of even $10.

It is often said that raising money through social media outlets is an easy endeavor.  We found that fact quite on the contrary!  It’s been quite a challenging endeavor to get more financial support through social media, but we choose to remain optimistic that in the next month we could at least reach  10% or more of our goal.

God willing, with the raised money so far, we should be able to begin filming at least Emahoy’s interview in Israel in the next month.

Your financial contribution of ANY amount is critical to make this film a reality.  We are counting on you:  https://www.gofundme.com/pmr3b54k

Thank YOU!!!!!
